Message Nice job on the Air Bag FAQs. Here is some additional information based on a Maxima service manual. Looks like it should all apply to the Z.

REPAIR ORDER FOR AIR BAG MALFUNCTION CODES.

Note: Remember to disconnect the negative battery cable a minimum of 10 minutes prior to attempting any repairs (Safety issue).

1. For any code first visually check all wiring harness connections. Never use any battery powered testers or ohmmeters on any connectors (safety issue). Cleaning connectors and use of dielectric grease is often advisable. Working a connector in and out several times is often enough to improve conductivity. Freshen up any obvious ground connections. Recheck for codes after any repairs.

2. Replace the malfunctioning unit. For a code 2 air bag module, replace spiral cable first then recheck for codes. Next replace air bag module and recheck for codes. Use proper procedures for air bag module disposal.

3. Replace control unit.

4. Replace main harness. Never repair, splice or modify a wiring harness.

5. For a code 9 run diagnostic mode 2. For any code there repair as shown above. Recheck for codes.

Another safety issue. Before air bag module disposal, it should be deployed using the service manual procedures.

Legal issues. It can happen that an air bag deploys when is shouldn't or doesn't deploy when it should. Remember that you could be held legally liable for any injuries resulting from improper maintenance. Also there may be local and state laws regarding what you can and cannot do when performing air bag maintenance. The information provided here are guidelines only. Refer to the proper service manual for more detailed information and procedures.
